You can include me in that list.
If an employee can show that an electronic device can reasonably improve their job performance, the company should pay for it. Little toys go a long way to keep people happy.
@LifesaPretzel - I agree with your "little toys" statement. I also think purchasing these electronics for employees helps them feel as though they are truly a valuable asset to the company, which probably makes them more productive!
From a security POV, allowing or even encouraging employees to provide their own hardware seems like a really bad idea. How can a company possibly ensure the security of any of those devices let alone their network when those devices access it? Furthermore, when an employee leaves, how can the company be sure they no longer have any sensitive data on their laptop/cell phone/PDA/whatever? Better to provide the tools the employee needs and be in control of it.
