nobosh.com Blog
Now there's more to view in your Viewing History!Your nobosh personal viewing history just got bigger and better! Now when you click on "Viewing History," you can see the stories that you nobosh'ed, bosh'ed, viewed only, as well as the total compilation across these three categories. Using an easily maneuverable tab format, this feature makes finding a story your previously read even easier and provides you with interesting data about your activity on the site.
We'd like to thank Naceron, a loyal nobosh user from Algeria, who suggested this great feature a few weeks ago. That's nobosh - continuously developing and improving because of you!

Introducing Publisher's Corner
What is Publisher's Corner?
Publisher's Corner is the source of weekly reports on nobosh's top 30 publishers. You'll find algorithmically-produced reports of each publisher's originality, visibility, popularity, and overall noboshness based on the stories they put out in the previous week. Intended for users and publishers alike, these reports are quintessentially nobosh - no editorial adjustment, no playing favorites with certain publishers, just pure and simple data that's relevant to you.
Statistics include:
Originality: The Originality statistic represents the frequency with which our publishers were first to break a particular story. The publisher that is first to issue a story on say, Fox acquiring Digg, for example, will earn extra points over publishers who follow with similar stories.
Popularity: The Popularity statistic assesses the degree to which a publisher's stories have received a warm reception among the nobosh community members. The Popularity stat takes into account over a dozen factors (e.g., user reputation, nobosh votes) to obtain the final percentage.
Visibility: The Visibility statistic represents the publisher's presence on nobosh. This stat is the percentage of stories contributed by any one publisher to the overall number of stories on nobosh.
noboshness: That je ne sais quoi that makes a story good - that's the overall noboshness! This statistic is the final summed factor which determines the ranks. It includes the Visibilty, Originality, and Popularity statistics.
I'm a Publisher. More Please!

Ready, Set, Find your Friends!
We're all about giving you a no nonsense nobosh experience. This past week, several nobosh networking enhancements went live to make sure you have just that.
Enhancement #1: Friend Search module. The Friend Search module, located directly under the Find Your Friends module, makes finding your friends as easy as a Google search. Whether you enter a nobosh community member's username or type in their full name, you will be able to quickly request them to be your friend, send them a message, view their profile, and more!
Enhancement #2: Friend Detail. Now, every nobosh community members has a Friend Detail Page. View your own (or someone else's) Friend Detail Page by clicking the "See All Friends" link on your (or your friend's) profile page. See a comprehensive list of your friends, your friends' friends (or your friends' friends' friends), view their profile, and send a friend request or short message to a community member with whom you'd like to connect.
Enhancement #3: Email Address Importer. The final site enhancement, an email address import tool (powered by Plaxo), allows you to find your nobosh friends in a secure and easy manner. nobosh compares the emails in your address book to our database of registered users to help you find your friends on the site. Click the "Invite People" link on the nobosh homepage, import the email addresses from your AOL, Gmail, or Yahoo! (among others) email account, and see who has already joined the nobosh community (don't forget to send these community members friend requests if they are not yet your friends). You'll also see which friends in your address book are waiting for your invitation to join the nobosh community!
Happy Networking,
BA

nobosh: Now Playing on Google Code
We're pleased to announce that we're getting the attention of VIPs at Google (perhaps you've heard of it?). Take a look at our spot on Google code, where we were just recognized for our use of AJAX Search. We may be basking in a little glory here, but we think the attention merits it.
Where will nobosh be featured next? Time will tell!

nobosh Refreshed: New Homepage & Category Layouts
We have received great feedback from the nobosh community since its launch earlier this year. Frequently, users requested a prominent aggregated Top 10 list on the homepage - a clear display of the best stories across all the nobosh categories. Importantly, users also identified the benefit of including images that were related to the stories brought in by the nobosh algorithms. These two great requests were successfully launched Sunday night (3/23).
The new layout offers a cleaner, more functional, and faster experience for nobosh users. The category pages also feature a slick ajax pagination system - give it a few clicks and we're sure you'll be impressed with the speed by which you're able to take in the day's best stories. Once you've read a story, don't forget to vote (nobosh it/bosh it). The animation we've added to the voting system is a fun way to see your vote counted within the nobosh algorithms.
We hope you enjoy the new layout as much as we do. Please don't be shy in submitting your feedback by either using the submit feedback form above or by commenting below.

Feed Addition - Silicon Alley Insider
We are thrilled to announce that stories from Silicon Alley Insider (aka Alley Inside) can now be found on nobosh. After careful consideration to ensure the quality of the stories met nobosh standards, we decided to include the stories in nobosh's Business & Finance Blogs section. From the Silicon Alley Insider site: "Silicon Alley Insider is a new business site, produced by and for the New York digital business community." Silicon Alley Insider provides news, commentary, and discussion about digital publishing, entertainment, news, music, social networking, mobile, and gaming.
Like all additions, we may remove the feed if we find that it doesn't fit with the nobosh community and its algorithms. If you find this to be true, please let us know.
Any other feeds you would like to see on nobosh.com? If so, don't be shy - use the submit feedback link above or click here.

Announcing: User Profiles!
You may have already noticed that user profiles have been added to the site. The profile page allows others to view your picture and related user information, as well as send you a brief message and request you as a friend. We encourage everyone to use their profile page to promote their web site and personal blog.
Currently on your profile page, your article comments are available for all users to view. In the near future, we will be providing the opportunity for you to add features to your profile page that only your confirmed friends can see.
Do you have a feature request for the profile page? Be sure to send us a note with your request or idea - just click the submit feedback link at the top of the page. If we end up implementing your idea, we'll send you a 100 dollar gift card and nobosh shirts for you and your entire family!

We're proud to introduce the newest addition to nobosh.com - nobosh Mail, the easiest way for you to send and receive private messages from your nobosh friends. Access nobosh Mail by clicking the mail icon in the header (the envelope).
The next time a friend shares a story with you, you can post a public comment or follow-up privately using nobosh Mail. When a nobosh story prompts an internal and private discussion, nobosh Mail is the perfect solution for you and your organization.
The new features don't stop here! Within the next couple of days, we will be launching nobosh Profiles. In addition to featuring the basic information of our nobosh community members, nobosh Profiles allow members to easily send nobosh Mail messages to each other. TGI (Thank Goodness It's): The nobosh Weekend Edition
As a member of our news-savvy community, you know that the volume of quality stories slows down over the weekend. The weekend also serves as an opportune time to catch up on the previous week's events. With those two things in mind, we have released the nobosh Weekend Edition, a special version of nobosh that goes live on Friday afternoons and sticks around through Sunday evening.
Among other features, the Weekend Edition highlights the nobosh Weekly 10, which is powered by the nobosh algorithms (as on the original nobosh, no editors here!). The nobosh Weekly 10 can easily be subscribed to via RSS or an email subscription. Beneath the nobosh Weekly 10, you'll find the latest news, keeping you up-to-date on any stories that break over the weekend.

Feed Addition - NY Times Business
Several of our users suggested we include the New York Times business feed in the business tech category. After careful consideration, we are excited to announce that the the NYTimes business feed has been added. Like all additions, we may remove the feed if the nobosh community and algorithms do not respond to the ingested stories, but we don't expect that to happen, do you?

nobosh iPhone App Goes Live & Gets Picked by Apple
For all of you with an iPhone, today is your lucky day. We have created an iPhone Web App that allows you to view all your favorite nobosh Top 10 Lists, Recent Stories, and even your Friend Feed, all ad free!
Even more exciting, the web app loads over the wireless network in under 3 seconds, faster than Digg or CBS News. Not too shabby! This is another example how the nobosh staff strives to be efficient with our user's time.
Special thanks to Joe Hewitt for the JavaScript framework. As always, we appreciate your feedback and continued participation to the nobosh community.

Friend Feed Enhancements
This weekend the team released an enhancement to the friend feed. The friend feed will now group actions per story for an individual user. For example, instead of seeing:
1. BA read Story 1
2. BA commented on Story 1
3. BA nobosh'ed Story 1
You will now see "BA read, commented on, & nobosh'ed Story 1." The new logic will also filter out any stories with a bosh'ed action. If you are interested in seeing what your friends have bosh'ed you'll need to visit the full feed. The reason for this update was that the mini-friend feed only displays 5 items and that we wanted to ensure that those 5 items were of the highest value possible. Last but not least, the mini-friend feed now has a refresh button allow you to easily update your feed without refreshing the page.
That's it for now on the friend feed. Be sure to stay tuned for future updates. And as always, if you have any ideas or feedback please comment below.
Thanks,
BA with the nobosh Team

Site Tour
This past week, many of you have noticed we released a site tour. While nobosh is a great news source while not even signed-in, nobosh is 10xs as useful when you are a registered, signed-in user. The tour demonstrates that nobosh offers several features for registered users including: Viewing History, a Friend Feed, and several preferences allowing you to customize the site to your liking. Settings such as, the ability to display the story view frame or not to, or even the ability to open stories in a new window or in the parent and so on.
A site tour link first displays on a user's first visit to the site in the blue welcome box. Additionally, a link to the site tour is placed conveniently above the login box.
